The cost of routine eye exams and prescription eyewear can be of real concern, especially for large families. In many cases, vision insurance can lower these annual expenses.
A vision insurance policy is not the same as medical insurance. Regular medical health insurance plans protect you against financial losses due to unexpected eye injuries or disease. Vision insurance, on the other hand, is a wellness benefit designed to provide routine eye care, prescription eyewear and other vision-related services at a reduced cost.
Are Contact Lenses Covered by Insurance?
Many vision insurance plans offer coverage for contact lenses, but the specifics depend on your provider and plan. Typically, insurance will either cover a portion of the cost of contact lenses or provide an annual allowance to help offset expenses. However, some plans classify contact lenses as an elective vision correction option, meaning coverage may be limited compared to traditional eyeglasses.
If you require medically necessary contact lenses—such as for keratoconus or severe dry eye—your insurance may cover a greater portion of the cost. At Pearson Eyecare Group, we can help you navigate your insurance benefits and determine how much coverage applies to your eye care needs.
Will Health Insurance Reimburse Glasses?
In most cases, standard health insurance does not cover eyeglasses unless they are deemed medically necessary following an injury or surgical procedure. However, vision insurance plans often provide benefits for prescription glasses, including frames and lenses, either through an annual allowance or a percentage-based discount. If you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA), you may also be able to use those funds toward eyewear purchases.
At Pearson Eyecare Group, we work with a variety of insurance providers and can assist you in maximizing your benefits when purchasing glasses at our walk-in eye clinic in Phoenix, AZ.
